    Wink

    I've got a technical question.

I've got a friend(actually 2 of them and seriously this is not me) who's IP was banned from a bulliten board.

Would a proxy server hide their IP and gain them access again. If so how does and work and what do they need to do.

If Not....anyway they can gain access?

Well a Proxy server does two things:

    1. It presents one IP address to the world while hiding the internal IP addresses of the users behind it. It other words, my interal IP may be 10.1.1.1 for example but the world sees 172.30.x.x or whatever valid class A, B, or C address your company may have.

    2. It stores commonly accessed web pages in cache so that they can be returned to the user much much quicker than doing a new search every single time.

So while I don't know the answer to your question exactly I would think that being behind a proxy would allow them to get around the banned status.

My question though is were they behind a proxy when they were banned? How are they getting behind a proxy server now?

Basically they were banned under whatever ISP they have.

Since they banned their ISP, they can not get in to even lurk.

Normally I would not care, but they are friends and they really did not cause problems. The so called admin just doesn't agree with their political stance. They continually bash these women...and now they have just pissed me off.

So I know there has to be a way they can get back in.

There are easier ways than attempting to connect to "proxy servers". Here, try this site. Paste the URL of the bulletin board in the "Starting URL" field, then click the "Start Surfing" button.

    http://www.the-cloak.com/login.html

    Here's another similar one.

    http://www.guardster.com/

Google on "anonymous surfing" to learn more.

Thank You Land...I passed on the info, and my freinds can at least lurk and see what is being said about them...it costs to post, so I'm sure they will not post unless absolutely neccessary. LOL

I see what you mean about "The Cloak", but I managed to post this using "The Guardster" link above. At one point it flipped me up to the top level of Hostboard and I had to drill clear back down to this thread, so it was a circuitous route, but I made it. Again, Google on "anonymous surfing" or "secure surfing" to ID similar services if you can't get along with those two. For the ultimate protection, perhaps Trav can figger out how we can access Traingle Boy.

This reminds me of the old Cincinnati.com bulletin board. Even though I had only dial up service at the time, I always posted through one of these services which slowed it down even more. I did this because that board listed your IP address in each post. By looking up that number, you could tell where each person worked (if they posted from work), don't recall if you can get a home address. Being paranoid, I didn't like that idea so I blocked my IP. One day Painkiller started a thread and listed the employers of all the prominent posters - he tried to list mine, but couldn't...
